CFA Mission

Through the art of Canadian fiddle music, we motivate, educate, and inspire children to develop musically and socially.

The Calgary Fiddlers are a musically gifted group of young people who love to perform and who appeal to audiences of all ages. This exciting ensemble, ages 14-18 yr, plays a wide range of music from traditional folk fiddling to country, bluegrass, Celtic, and even big band. Each fiddler has a rigorous training schedule that includes private and group coaching sessions on a weekly basis, in addition to performing at over 100 functions in and around the Calgary area. In the past year, they have had the experience of recording in a studio, making a music video, LINK HERE, and participating in the Fiddle Youth Summit in Vancouver. This group will be traveling to Spain this summer to perform at an International Festival. After two years of shifting rehearsals and coaching sessions from in-person to virtual numerous times, the Calgary Fiddlers are excited to perform to a live audience!

Special recognition to Joleen and Paige! This is their final year with the CFA and we will certainly miss you both! Wishing you success, good health and happiness in your next journey!

Joleene started the violin when she was 6 years old. One day coming out of Prepatory Strings orchestra rehearsal she saw the Bow Valley Fiddlers playing in the lobby and fell in love with their costumes. Joleene started in the Intermediate group. She attended her first “Sweet on Fiddlin” and fell in love with the chocolate hats and that was it. She played in the Senior group and the Performing group but had to wait until she was old enough to be a Calgary Fiddler. 5 years later, she leaves with a heavy heart but full of great memories and friends that she hopes to see in France where she is going to study next year. Joleene will carry on with orchestra but who knows, she may create her own French Fiddlers group! Beware Nola.

Paige started the Suzuki violin program at 4 years of age. Two Calgary Fiddler alumni convinced Paige and her sister to come on board to the Bow valley Fiddlers and she has been playing fiddle music ever since. Paige started in the Intermediate group then moved through the Senior and the Performing group before spending 3 years with the Calgary Fiddlers. Paige is moving to Vancouver for post secondary but still hopes to play wherever she can.

The Calgary Fiddler’s Association has given these girls the opportunity to practice public speaking, attend workshops by talented musicians, star in their own music video, record their very own album and perform live all over the world. These past years have been a great experience for both Joleene and Paige.

Our very special guests, The North Shore Celtic Ensemble!

The North Shore Celtic Ensemble is a dynamic community of young musicians from North Vancouver, Canada. The Ensemble brings raw energy and a whole new style to the Vancouver music scene. What started as Celtic is now a spirited no-boundaries exploration of music that inspires us. The result is a full-spectrum music experience that defies labels and spans conventional genres. Our own original compositions draw on Celtic, classical, jazz and folk influences and are blended with creative arrangements of more traditional Celtic tunes. Seven CDs celebrate our music and its west coast roots.

We have produced music groups for children and teens in Metro Vancouver since 1998. Currently, the Ensemble has four groups which range from beginner to advanced levels. It has toured across North America, Europe and China, performs regularly for local concerts and festivals, and supports a number of charitable programs through our Community Concert Series. More than just a performing group, the North Shore Celtic Ensemble is a meeting place for youth to explore and share music. Music is about connecting, with people of all ages and cultures, and the Ensemble is committed to helping to build connections through exceptional community performances and creative collaborations with other artists and arts organizations.
